As the Texas heat wave escalates, Governor Greg Abbott has made headlines for signing off a law that puts an end to mandatory water breaks for construction workers. The new legislation supersedes municipal labor rules set by cities like Austin and Dallas, which previously required employers to provide their outdoor workers with a 10-minute water break every four hours.

The implications of this law are significant considering Texas’ troubling history with heat-related work fatalities. The Lone Star state holds the grim record for the highest number of such deaths in the US. The implementation of this legislation during soaring temperatures has ignited concerns among labor leaders who predict an upsurge in workplace injuries and fatalities due to heat stress.

In 2022 alone, Texas witnessed at least 279 deaths associated with heat, marking its highest toll since 1999. As the mercury continues to rise, the situation for outdoor workers is only expected to worsen. This change in law highlights the need for improved safety measures to protect those who work in such challenging environments, particularly in light of the changing climate.

Governor Abbott’s decision raises important questions about workers’ rights and safety in the face of environmental challenges. It serves as a stark reminder of the crucial balance that needs to be struck between economic growth, labor regulations, and the well-being of workers, especially in a world grappling with the impacts of climate change.
