Why Letting Pets Ride Loose in the Car Is Dangerous

Distracted driving already accounts for thousands of accidents every year, and an unrestrained pet adds another layer of unpredictability. A sudden stop can turn your beloved dog or cat into a projectile, injuring both them and you. Veterinarians point out that even airbags can cause harm, which means pets shouldn’t ride in the front seat — even inside a carrier. The safest options are crash-tested kennels or harnesses securely anchored to the vehicle, giving your pet protection without putting anyone else at risk.

The dangers go beyond crashes. Pets leaning out of open windows may get injured by flying debris or, worse, fall out entirely. Veterinary clinics see cases like this far too often. As one expert noted, you wouldn’t let a child ride loose in a moving car — so why would you let your animal companion?

Thankfully, safer solutions exist.
