For many of us, road trips feel incomplete without our furry companions curled up in the backseat — or, let’s be honest, sometimes on our laps. But while the image of a dog with its head out the window or a cat perched near the steering wheel seems charming, it’s actually a serious safety risk. According to Mel Plaut at NYT Wirecutter, experts strongly advise against letting pets ride loose in the car.
Distracted driving already accounts for thousands of accidents every year, and an unrestrained pet adds another layer of unpredictability. A sudden stop can turn your beloved dog or cat into a projectile, injuring both them and you. Veterinarians point out that even airbags can cause harm, which means pets shouldn’t ride in the front seat — even inside a carrier. The safest options are crash-tested kennels or harnesses securely anchored to the vehicle, giving your pet protection without putting anyone else at risk.
The dangers go beyond crashes. Pets leaning out of open windows may get injured by flying debris or, worse, fall out entirely. Veterinary clinics see cases like this far too often. As one expert noted, you wouldn’t let a child ride loose in a moving car — so why would you let your animal companion?
Thankfully, safer solutions exist. Carriers like the Sleepypod Air or Thule Collapsible Dog Kennel have been crash-tested, while harnesses such as Sleepypod’s Clickit Sport Plus offer options for larger dogs that won’t tolerate confinement. Training your pet to see these carriers as safe, cozy spaces at home before travel can also make road trips less stressful for everyone involved.
Our animals give us so much unconditional love, and keeping them secure on the road is one of the simplest ways to protect them. Next time you load up for a drive, choose safety over cuteness — your animal friend, and the people sharing the road, will thank you.
