TikTok is stepping up to fight climate change misinformation on its platform! As of April 21st, the popular social media app has started implementing its updated community guidelines, which now prohibit videos containing Climate change misinformation. This exciting move comes after TikTok committed to no longer allowing content that “undermines well-established scientific consensus” regarding the climate crisis.

While users can still post videos discussing Climate change-related topics, such as government policies, these discussions must align with the scientific consensus. TikTok will promptly delete any content that violates its new policy, and users searching for climate information will be directed to “authoritative information” provided in partnership with the United Nations.

This decision follows a report published by internet trust researchers at NewsGuard in 2022, which found TikTok rife with false information on various topics, including Climate change. Search suggestions like “Climate change debunked” and “Climate change doesn’t exist” previously surfaced when users looked for Climate change information. TikTok has also faced challenges with COVID-19 misinformation and election-related content, leading to the removal of over 300,000 election-related videos and 50,000 videos sharing COVID-19 misinformation.

In addition to the new policy on Climate change, TikTok has introduced new rules covering AI-generated content. All digitally manipulated or created media on TikTok must now come with appropriate tags, such as “synthetic,” “fake,” or “altered.”

TikTok’s commitment to combating Climate change misinformation and promoting accurate, science-based information is a significant step in the right direction. As a community, we must continue to demand transparency and truth from social media platforms and hold them accountable for the information they share.

Join the movement and help spread accurate information about Climate change! Share reliable, science-backed content on your social media platforms, and engage in thoughtful discussions on climate-related topics. Encourage your friends and family to stay informed, think critically, and make responsible choices for our planet’s future. Together, we can make a difference and create a more sustainable world for generations to come!
