This Startup Uses Minerals to Draw Down Carbon

Heirloom Carbon Technologies has reported that it can remove carbon for $50 a ton, and can remove one billion tons by 2035, MIT Technology Review reports. The startup has already gotten Stripe on board to purchase some carbon removal.

The company cooks materials include ground limestone at high temperatures and processes it to it pulls carbon dioxide from the air. The product can be reused multiple times.

But the price is still quite high, Stripe is paying $2,054 per ton to remove 250 tons of carbon. Heirloom is hopeful the price will drop.

Heirloom’s CEO, Shashank Samala, said that the high-priced buyers are important as the company looks to scale. “Deployment is what makes this cheaper, unleashes new markets, and drives down costs further,” he says.
