Southwest Airlines Gave Animals Stranded in Harvey a Lift to Their New Homes – and It’s Too Cute

Southwest Airlines recently teamed up with the Texas-based rescue group Operation Pets Alive! and San Diego’s Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC) to help pets displaced after Hurricane Harvey. The collaborative effort led to an airplane cabin filled with 64 dogs and cats that were flown from overcrowded pet shelters in Texas to San Diego, California, where they will be looking for their new homes.
Thanks to the big move, the Texas shelters now have more room for family pets whose guardians are currently displaced from their homes. The previous residents of the shelters found their temporary place at the HWAC shelter are now waiting for their forever homes.
The relocated animals found themselves on a 1,400-mile flight from Texas to California.
But they were in for a great experience, “with plenty of love to go around,” Southwest Airlines wrote.
The animals had a group of volunteers and even flight attendants to care for them and offer a lot of much-needed pets and cuddles.
HWAC also sent four medical personnel to Texas to assist the organization and provide medical care for shelter animals.
“We’re humbled and inspired by the teamwork shown by our partners and Employees to coordinate and fly 64 animals from Houston shelters that needed to be moved to make room for families’ displaced pets,” said Southwest Airlines.

Mike Arms, President of HWAC, pointed out that the animals were “the silent victims” of the tragedy as many shelters were devastated by the hurricane and devoid of electricity and supplies.
Operation Pets Alive! has taken in a large number of dogs and cats that were in the shelters before the hurricane and were now, due to the circumstances, facing euthanasia because of the lack of room. “We are honored to help save those lives and we are lucky to have incredible friends like Southwest to help make this all possible,” Arms said in a statement.
Rescue efforts in the areas affected by Hurricane Harvey are still underway. This week, another charity group, Wings of Rescue from Illinois, flew 180 dogs and cats from Texas to Waukegan, reports WGN-TV.
