Strolling down a nature trail near his home in Colorado, wildlife photographer Ben Jardina was accustomed to quietly observing animals in their natural habitats. One day, however, it was Ben who was sought out by a creature – a tortoise!

“I noticed a tortoise rushing towards me,” shared Ben, noting that seeing a tortoise seemingly out of place in this region was an anomaly. The tortoise’s behavior suggested that it was once someone’s pet.

Upon closer inspection, Ben found the tortoise in poor health – her beak overgrown and claws missing from one foot. His heart strings tugged, Ben knew what he had to do. “She was coming towards me, hoping for some relief,” he surmised.

He swiftly ferried the tortoise to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region. The staff confirmed his suspicion that she was likely an escaped pet and needed urgent medical attention.

Seeking a potential reunion, Ben posted about the tortoise on social media. Miraculously, a local family recognized their long-lost pet who had been missing for three whole years! Photos validated the match, and a mystery that had puzzled this family was finally solved.
