The top reason people in the United States remain skeptical about human contributions to climate change is the widespread misinformation, and the billions of dollars spent funding denialism. Unfortunately, just ten digital publishers produce the majority of climate change denial online, and Google is still running ads for all of them. Although Google had previously announced that it would stop placing ads on sites that deny the scientific consensus on Climate change, they have since featured ads claiming that Climate change is “a gigantic eco-fascist gaslighting operation” and a hoax to The New York Times.
This is concerning considering that the ad revenue that these denial sites earn by running Google ads helps to fund more denial content. Not only does this kind of false advertisement confuse people, but it also delays climate action and reduces trust in scientists.

The world is already experiencing the devastating effects of Climate change. If we continue on this path, it will negatively impact biodiversity and ecosystems across the globe. It could cause the extinction of many insects, plants, and vertebrates and increase the risk of extreme weather events, like forest fires. According to the IPCC, “a 1.5°C average rise may put 20-30% of species at risk of extinction. If the planet warms by more than 2°C, most ecosystems will struggle.” Climate change is happening too quickly for many species to adapt.
It is entirely unacceptable that Google promotes and profits from such harmful disinformation. Sign this petition to demand that Google stop running ads for digital publishers that profit from climate denialism!
