These Kind People Helped a Disoriented Nesting Sea Turtle Get Back to the Ocean

The nesting habits of sea turtles are quite particular and not entirely understood by researchers. For example, the turtles nest on some beaches but do not do so on others – in Florida, loggerheads nest in great numbers on the central east coast, while on the practically identical-looking north beaches, there are very few of them. This curious phenomenon may reflect conditions of nesting that existed centuries ago and are still observed by the animals. Now, sea turtles’ nesting places are greatly affected by humans. Beaches are impacted by such man-made factors as coastal armoring, artificial lighting, and beach renourishment.

The nesting sea turtle females crawl out of the ocean usually at night, choosing their spot carefully. This delicate process can be disturbed by the many man-made factors that are now widespread on many beaches.

Recently, a disoriented nesting sea turtle on South Roosevelt Boulevard was helped back to the ocean after she left her nest.

The turtle was led back to the ocean by a wonderful team of helpers. The Key West Police Department partnered with The Key West Sea Turtle Club in assisting the animal.

The loggerhead nest was luckily found and relocated to a more viable spot where the new turtle family would be safe.

This swift action would not have been such a great success had it not been for the wonderful teamwork of the many people ready to make sure the turtle would find her way back to her nest!

Thanks to this great team, the poor sea turtle was safely recovered from the street and is now back she belongs. Hopefully, she will never have a similar adventure ever again!
