According to The New York Times, our furry companions face many of the same environmental dangers humans do — from wildfire smoke to household toxins. While researchers are still uncovering the full extent of Pollution’s impact on animals, experts agree that simple preventive steps can make a major difference.

When wildfires rage or air quality plummets, pet owners should limit outdoor time, avoiding long walks or vigorous activity that increases respiration. After brief outings, wiping your pet’s fur with a damp towel can help remove pollutants that cling to hair. Indoors, keep windows closed and use a high-quality air purifier to reduce smoke particles. Hydration is crucial too — smoky air can dry out nasal passages and the respiratory tract, so ensure constant access to fresh water.

For pets with irritated eyes, veterinarians suggest over-the-counter eyewash and lubricating drops to prevent itching and redness. If symptoms persist — such as rubbing, tearing, or squinting — seek veterinary care immediately.

But Pollution isn’t just an outdoor issue. Many indoor products — like gas stoves, incense, perfumes, and cleaning sprays — release hazardous compounds that affect your pet’s health and air quality. Experts recommend improving ventilation and vacuuming regularly to remove dust-bound toxins. Old homes with lead paint can also pose serious risks. Pets, like toddlers, explore by sniffing and licking, which makes them vulnerable to lead poisoning.

If your home has lead pipes, use a filter and flush taps before refilling bowls. Choose “drinking water safe” hoses and avoid older ceramic dishes that may contain lead. Opting for lead-free, U.S.-made pet products can safeguard both your pets and your household.

Protecting our animal companions from Pollution is part of protecting our shared environment. By taking small, thoughtful steps, we can help every living being breathe a little easier.
