Caloric Restriction (CR) is the practice of intentionally ingesting fewer calories than your body needs for weight maintenance and regular functioning on a daily basis.
The first evidence that caloric restriction could extend lifespan was presented as early as the 1930s. However, several years ago there was a new push in CR research, and a number of studies emerged, again touting Caloric Restriction for increased longevity and healthy aging.
The latest set of research suggests that this practice could also help ward off asthma, cardiovascular disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, breast cancer, and diabetes, among other diseases.
There are plenty of anecdotal accounts of people of various ages and sizes experiencing incredible health and vitality by following this practice. However, research suggests that the most pronounced health benefits of CR are for individuals who are currently overweight or obese. More research is needed to better understand potential benefits for lean individuals.
