The northeastern region of Catalonia in Spain bid farewell to the country’s bullfighting tradition with a final event at the Barcelona bullring (The Monumental) on September 25, 2011.
A regional ban on the cruel “sport” takes effect January 1, 2012.
The popularity of bullfighting in Catalonia has declined in recent decades and the Catalan Parliament finally banned the sport in July 2010, after a signature-collection campaign led by Animal rights activists.
Catalonia is the second of Spain’s 17 regions to ban bullfighting and for the moment there are no signs any other Spanish region will follow suit.
