‘Blackfish’ Takes on the World with New Distribution Deals

Since its release in 2013, the documentary “Blackfish” has taken the U.S. by storm, touching the hearts of animal lovers across the country with the heartbreaking story of Tilikum – a wild-caught orca that has been held in captivity for 30 years.

As we’ve documented many times over on OGP, “Blackfish” spurred a nationwide backlash against the marine park giant SeaWorld Entertainment Inc., inspiring a number of musical artists to cancel their SeaWorld Bands, Blues and BBQ concert performances and boycotts to sprout up across the U.S.

Even though the documentary was snubbed for an Oscar nomination to the great dismay of fans and activists alike, “Blackfish” is not losing any of its steam — so SeaWorld, watch out!

In fact, documentary distributor Dogwoof, which acquired “Blackfish” in 2013 following its premiere at Sundance, has recently announced that they have closed a multi-territory sales deal with NBCUniversal.

What this means is that “Blackfish” will soon be arriving in Asia, Italy, Portugal, central and eastern Europe, Scandinavia, and Latin America! Woohoo!

This is excellent news since it will allow Tilikum’s story to spread to nearly every corner of the Earth and hopefully inspire many viewers to boycott marine park facilities and speak up in Support of true orca Conservation.
