Inspired by Carolyn Hartz, who has famously lived a sugar-free life for nearly three decades, Nana Meriwether embarked on a 30-day sugar detox journey. This wasn’t merely a personal challenge; it represented a step towards a healthier lifestyle and a valuable chance to reset the body’s system.
Before this daring venture, signs of skin breakouts were evident, a clear indication of excess sugar consumption negatively affecting the body. Sugar was sneakily present even in unsuspecting foods, leading to inadvertent overconsumption. The time had arrived to cut it out altogether, including naturally sugary fruits and honey.
The detox journey commenced in Venice Beach, LA, a place synonymous with health and wellness. The day began with warm lemon water and meditation, marking a conscious decision to avoid all forms of sugar. It became evident how sugar had infiltrated almost every food item on supermarket shelves!
Substitutions were made to the daily routine – oat milk in coffee was replaced with unsweetened almond milk. Breakfast consisted of a wholesome plate of eggs, bacon, avocado, and salad on toast. While shopping for groceries, the central aisles of processed food were ignored, instead opting for fresh vegetables and protein found around the periphery of the store.
Meals throughout the week were colorful arrays of eggs, vegetables, fermented cabbage, avocado, and hummus. Despite travel and bouts of exhaustion, it was important to prioritize sleep.
Meriwether noticed that her energy levels were on the rise and felt more balanced. Midway through the sugar-free month, clear improvements had been made in her radiant skin, a slimmer waist, enhanced mood, reduced anxiety, and to everyone’s surprise, the disappearance of sugar cravings.
When the 30-day mark arrived, the results were astounding. Nana had successfully maintained a vibrant social life, merely swapping sugary cocktails for dry wine. The progress made was measurable, with the fasting blood sugar level well within a healthy range, significantly lower than when the journey began.
This sugar detox was transformative, altering the approach to food and creating a new habit of avoiding desserts and overly sugary items. Living in a world inundated with sugar, this 30-day detox was a true revelation.
