Australia’s Northern Territory is planning to reverse progress by jailing children as young as 10 years old. This comes after briefly raising the minimum age of criminal responsibility to 12. Shockingly, most other Australian states never made that change—meaning 10-year-olds across the country can still be imprisoned.
The real injustice? Aboriginal children are being targeted. In the Northern Territory, they’re locked up 11 times more often than anywhere else—and the vast majority are Aboriginal. These laws are not just cruel, they’re clearly racist.
Throwing vulnerable kids into a broken system ignores the trauma and systemic issues they face. Experts agree: it destroys futures, doesn’t solve problems.
We need rehabilitation, not incarceration. Sign the petition now to raise the age of criminal responsibility and protect every child’s right to grow up safe and free.
