Scientists are raising the alarm about an “unprecedented” marine heatwave off the UK and Irish coasts, warning of potential mass mortality of fish, oysters, and plant life. The sustained high sea temperatures are hitting record levels for spring and summer, and the ensuing risks could echo far beyond marine life, impacting human economies and well-being.
According to the Met Office, the global sea surface temperatures for April and May reached a historical high, with June set to follow suit. The North Sea and North Atlantic are heating up more than ever before, and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has classified certain parts of the North Sea as being in an “extreme” category four marine heatwave.
The rising temperatures are being linked to both human-induced warming and the naturally occurring El Niño weather phenomenon. Experts warn that while marine heatwaves are typical in warmer regions like the Mediterranean, such extreme temperatures in the North Atlantic are out of the ordinary and could lead to devastating consequences.
Excessive heat can stress marine organisms, and in some parts of the world, ocean heat waves have led to mass mortalities of marine plants and animals. The resulting losses in fisheries income, carbon storage, habitat loss, and cultural value reach into the hundreds of millions of pounds.
Dr. Dan Smale, from the Marine Biological Association called the current temperatures unprecedented and potentially devastating. Should the heat persist through the summer, a mass mortality event of kelp, seagrass, fish, and oysters could occur.
Warmer sea temperatures also contribute to sea ice reduction, impacting both Arctic and Antarctic regions. This year, Antarctic sea ice shrunk to a record low for this time of year, sparking further concerns over the long-term health of our oceans.
This quadruple whammy of high temperatures caused by human-induced warming, less Saharan dust reflecting heat, El Niño conditions, and the removal of sulfur from marine shipping fuels signals a new level of urgency in the fight against Climate change. Scientists are stressing the need for aggressive action to curb greenhouse gas emissions and protect our vital marine ecosystems.
