Thousands of animals – including family dogs, endangered wolves, and even bald eagles – have allegedly died from M-44 cyanide bombs. These spring-loaded poison traps, still used on U.S. public lands, are designed to kill predators but often claim unintended victims. In just two years, over 10,000 animals were killed this way – including more than 50 family dogs. Humans aren’t immune either: 14-year-old Canyon Mansfield nearly died, and his dog Kasey was killed, after triggering one in Idaho.
Congress must pass Canyon’s Law to ban these outdated, indiscriminate traps from all public lands. The Bureau of Land Management has already banned M-44s, but other federal agencies still permit them. These devices are cruel, unnecessary, and dangerous. It’s time to end their use for good.
