A young bear in Michigan spent two years suffering with a heavy plastic lid stuck around his neck. As a cub, he got trapped investigating what seemed like a harmless barrel—only it wasn’t. It was a bear-baiting barrel used by trophy hunters to lure in bears with food, then kill them at close range. Shockingly, this disturbing practice is still legal in Michigan.
Hunters allegedly share tips online on how to set up these baiting barrels to better trap and kill bears. It’s legalised cruelty—and bears like this resilient cub, who somehow survived for two years with the lid cutting into his neck, are paying the price. Officials were finally able to free him, but many others won’t be so lucky.
We must protect wildlife from such barbaric tactics. Michigan lawmakers must ban bear-baiting and bear-hunting now. These majestic animals deserve to live in peace—not be lured into a trap for sport.
