A two-year-old Beagle named Gregory came to the Franklin County Dog Shelter in Columbus, Ohio as a stray. When the staff found him to be heartworm-positive, they placed Gregory on the euthanasia list. This is a common practice in shelters that often have more animals than they can afford to take care of and need to make room for the constant influx of new dogs. Fortunately, the little dog’s luck took a quick turn. Gregory was pulled from the list by Schenley and Joe Kirk, co-founders of Hound Rescue and Sanctuary – and he embarked on the happiest car ride of his life.
Schenley, who regularly looks through nearby shelters for animals in similar positions, spotted Gregory just in time. She knew right away that she had to save him. Her husband drove two hours to pick up their new friend and when they first met, it felt like they had “known each other for years,” he told Today.

Although the couple usually transports dogs in a crate, Schenley felt like Gregory had already been caged up for too long. During the car ride home, Gregory acted as if he knew exactly what had just happened, and all he wanted was to cuddle and be as close to his new best friend as possible.
The lucky Beagle is adjusting well and has started heartworm treatment. Schenley describes him as a very loving and affectionate little guy who just “loves to be next to you” and “loves to give kisses.” The couple already has an adoption offer for Gregory, and he will be able to meet his potential forever family when he is cleared by a veterinarian in about two months.
“That is why we do what we do. That is what makes it all worthwhile, knowing that we are able to save the lives of these dogs in need,” Schenley said. “And their appreciation and the love they give back is amazing. There’s nothing better.”
