According to a petition from Four Paws, the organization that recently helped rescue the bear and lion from the Mosul Zoo, on Care2, around 50 bears are being kept in chains in Albania for use as tourist attractions. The petition states that most of these bears were born in the wild and then illegally captured. Despite both Albanian and international laws that protect bears, the bear trade is flourishing.
Once free to roam expanses of nature, these sad captive bears now live chained in cramped concrete cages, forced to pose for photos with tourists at beaches and restaurants. Appealing to Albania’s desire to become a sought-after European travel destination, the petition states that adhering to animal welfare laws will shine favorably on the country and help give a boost to its tourism industry.
If you are upset by the heartbreaking state of these captive bears, please take a moment to sign this petition addressed to Albania’s Minister of Environment requesting two things: the stricter enforcement of animal protection laws that are already in place, and the banning of the private ownership of bears.
Like all wild animals, these beautiful bears belong in the wild, and they should never be kept in chains or used for entertainment. Please share this with friends and remind them why supporting animal tourist attractions supports animal cruelty.
