We see a lot of elephants saving their babies around here on One Green Planet. I get the feeling it’s just a part of growing up as a pachyderm.
You don’t always see elephants when fresh water is around, but the inverse is often true. Elephants love to go for a dip to play, cool off, and stay hydrated in their warm environments, and females even take their calves along to show them the ropes. Elephants are natural-born swimmers, but sometimes the water is too turbulent or a lake floor is too slippery for the awkward little ones to keep their footing, and they need a hand from mom. Watch this high-quality video for yet another reminder of the intense bond between mother elephant and calf.
Just like human babies, elephant calves and their families are inseparable. If you see one alone, separated from its herd, that means something isn’t right.
