For anyone who is concerned about the plight of the African elephant, this stunning three-and-a-half minute video called “Wild,” by The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT), is a must-see. It documents the organization’s desperate struggle to combat illegal elephant poaching. Currently, one elephant is killed for their ivory every fifteen minutes. If this rate does not slow down, it is believed that these majestic animals may be extinct in the wild across Africa in less than a decade: a truly horrifying prospect.
The video features segments of an interview with Julius – an elephant keeper at DSWT’s orphan nursery in Nairobi, Kenya – as well as Nick Trent, DSWT pilot. They work tirelessly alongside The Kenya Wildlife Service in Tsavo National Park, where the land has sadly become “a battlefield between man and nature.”

While there have lately been many positive signs indicating that ivory is on its way out – including an important agreement by the U.S. and China, the two biggest ivory-consuming countries in the world, to combat the trade – there is still a lot of work that needs to be done on behalf of endangered elephants. Let’s hope this action happens fast, for the sake of elephants … and us.
