With so many adoptable dogs at shelters and rescues (even purebreds!), you would think buying a dog from a pet store was a thing of the past. Unfortunately, that is not the case. People are still supporting stores that sell puppies, which in turn are supporting the cruel puppy mill industry.

Just recently, the Humane Society of the United States went undercover in a New York City pet store where they found animals suffering from untreated illnesses. They also reported rough handling of the animals by the employees. This is typical of most pet stores that sell puppies from puppy mills. To them, these innocent animals are just a way to make a quick buck. However, it’s not just the pet store animals that are suffering, it’s the also the forgotten mothers at the puppy mills that are enduring immense cruelty.

The female dogs at puppy mills used for breeding are usually kept in highly unsanitary conditions, receive little or no medical care, and live in small cages with little social interaction. These mothers are used for breeding their entire lives, only to be tossed away like trash when they can’t be used anymore. Additionally, many puppy mills use hormones and steroids in an attempt to produce as many puppies as possible. The life of a puppy mill dog is one that is filled with disease, pain, and unimaginable suffering.

The only way to bring puppy mills to an end is by NOT buying from pet stores, spreading awareness about the realities of puppy mills, and encouraging others to only adopt a rescue.
